Het verwondert mij niet dat het afwijzen van een one-size-fits-all benadering voor onderzoeksondersteuning (opnieuw) een van de belangrijkste conclusies is.

400 Ph. D. theses on Middle Eastern and Islamic studies have been digitized and released in a partnership between the British Library and the Chicago-based Center for Research Libraries. They will be available for free through the British Library’s EThOS (Electronic Theses Online) service.

Interestingly, EThOS is funded by 111 partner UK universities. More than 38,000 theses have been digitized and are available for free download. More information :

The Online Library of Liberty

The Online Library of Liberty (OLL) is a project of Liberty Fund, Inc., a private, non-profit educational foundation based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The aim of the OLL is to provide thousands of titles about individual liberty, limited constitutional government, and the free market, free of charge to the public, for educational purposes. The OLL has won a number of international awards for its outstanding collection of online material in the humanities and social sciences. It has been recognised by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the British Arts & Humanities Research Council, and the International Political Science Association .

Open Access Online Library Humanities

Today a publisher-run Open Access online library filled with freely available academic books in the Humanities and Social Sciences from across Europe is officially launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair. And that’s not all – the same people who made this possible are busy developing an OA-publishing platform that can be used by academic publishers and research funding institutes, based on their respective needs. And, yes, you guess it, all was started at the request of the European Commission.

Miljoen Nederlandse krantenpagina's online

Op het computerscherm kunnen lezen wat grootouders en overgrootouders in hun leunstoel lazen in het licht van een olielamp of gloeilamp. Dat kan dankzij een immens project van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek. De KB digitaliseert een omvangrijk deel van alle landelijke, regionale, lokale en koloniale kranten die zijn verschenen tussen 1618 en 1995.

Eén miljoen pagina's is nu voor iedereen toegankelijk. Het gaat om meer dan zeventig verschillende kranten, van de Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant tot het Algemeen Handelsblad en de Rotterdamsche Courant. De overige zeven miljoen pagina's worden in de komende achttien maanden in etappes aan de website toegevoegd.

Grootste ter wereld
De webdienst is de grootste, gratis toegankelijke online krantendatabank ter wereld en maakt deel uit van het voornemen van de KB om over vier jaar tien procent van alle Nederlandse boeken, kranten en tijdschriften digitaal beschikbaar te stellen.
Voor de digitalisering van de kranten is niet alleen gebruik gemaakt van de collectie van de KB, maar ook van het bezit van meer dan twintig Nederlandse archieven en bibliotheken. Daarnaast heeft een aantal buitenlandse instellingen, waaronder het Vaticaans archief, het Russische Staatsarchief voor oude akten en het Nationaal Archief Suriname, hun exemplaren beschikbaar gesteld.

Zeldzame kranten
Unieke Nederlandse kranten uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw, die voorheen niet of nauwelijks toegankelijk waren, kunnen straks door iedereen op het web worden geraadpleegd en op elk willekeurig woord in de tekst doorzocht worden.
Zeldzame krantentitels, die verspreid waren geraakt over meerdere buitenlandse instellingen, zijn voor het eerst bijeengebracht en doorzoekbaar gemaakt. Een wetenschappelijke adviescommissie met deskundigen op het terrein van de (pers)geschiedenis heeft de selectie gemaakt.

Websites are a major resource for research into contemporary religion, comprising a range of primary and secondary information and data mostly unavailable in printed form.
However, websites are dynamic and can be ephemeral, with the result that their content can quickly disappear into a black hole and become inaccessible through broken links.

In an attempt to prevent this ‘digital dark age’, the British Library has been working with a range of partners and contributors in recent years to develop the UK Web Archive.

Waar is Hegel gebleven? Plaatsing collecties LET en CIF

Tijdens de herinrichting zijn de collecties LET en CIF weggeweest en weer teruggeplaatst op niveau 2 van de bibliotheek. Maar voor ieder van de collecties was in de nieuwe opstelling slechts ruimte voor 2 dubbele kasten (was 9 voor LET en 5 voor CIF). Sanering, dus boeken wegdoen is voor Geesteswetenschappen maar beperkt mogelijk. Een boek dat je nu wegdoet moet je morgen weer antiquarisch aanschaffen! We hebben dus geen boeken weggedaan, alleen een aantal die we dubbel hadden en waarvan niet verwacht werd dat we daarvan dubbele nodig hadden.

Zowel bij LET als bij CIF zijn de materialen die niet terugkwamen in het open gedeelte van de bibliotheek in het magazijn geplaatst. Deze boeken moet je nu via een depotaanvraag verkrijgen. Ze hebben de oude rubriekscode behouden, met de CBM (=centraal boekenmagazijn) aanduiding ervoor.
Een boek dat voorheen bij CIF G1 ZUCK 2009 zou staan, heeft nu als vindplaats CBM CIF G1 ZUCK 2009.
Het zal wennen worden. Voorheen stond je voor de kast en kon je de boeken van een bepaald onderwerp bij elkaar vinden. Nu moet je dat in de catalogus doen. Je kunt dan bijvoorbeeld zoeken op Cultuurfilosofie, vindplaats CIF C3? (Let op het vraagteken). Dan vind je de boeken met hetzelfde onderwerp of van dezelfde filosoof, zowel de boeken waarvoor je een depotaanvraag moet doen (met CBM ervoor) als de boeken die op niveau 2 staan. Maar je kunt ze nog steeds vinden met de oude vindplaats! Een overzicht van de rubrieken vind je hier:

De meest recente filosofen staan nog wel boven. Bij LET is gekozen voor de meest gebruikte rubrieken.
